Northern Guilford Middle School’s Social Studies teacher Mr. Gabriel Sams led faculty, staff and the PTSA in an effort to provide a sun safe and fun educational space for students to learn.
A 36’x36′ square sail makes up the structure’s tension membrane cover and shades the Outdoor Learning Center’s concrete founda-tion. It is made of a high-density polyethylene fabric with ultraviolet additives for increased sun protection. A vibrant purple hue was cho-sen for the structure’s powder-coated steel columns and matches Northern’s school colors.
Installation of the sail marked the completion of the project’s second phase. Its final phrase will include a brick marquee that highlights local companies and individuals who have supported the Center. The marquee will also double as a storage space for school supplies and materials needed for class.
